Civil War
There were many events that showed the relationship between the North and South beginning to divide. Four events among the many are the Missouri Compromise of 1820, the Missouri Compromise of 1850, the Kansas-Nebraska Act, and Bleeding Kansas.
The North and the South differed between each other in several ways. The North consisted of a diverse, fast-growing population. They had many factories that produced manufactured goods. The North also had good means of communication because of their high concentration on railroads and well-developed telegraph system. On the other hand, the South’s economy was based on agriculture. They had few cities and factories, and had less-developed railroads. The South also relied on slave labor.
Both the North and the South had their share of advantages. The North’s population reached to about 21.5 million, compared to the South’s 9 million. The North also had a railroad mileage of 21,700 miles and had about 110,100 factories. The South had good leadership, considering 7/8 military schools were located in the South. They had military tactics, and the morale to fight.
The North and the South also had its’ disadvantages. The North consisted of a divided public opinion; some didn’t want to free slaves. They were away from homes and the climate wasn’t very favorable to them. They also had under-trained and timid generals. The South had an agricultural economy, meaning they couldn’t supply themselves with weapons and whatnot. They had no Army, no Navy, and no national government. They also had a few railroads.
There were several examples of advances in military and medical technology in result of the Civil War. An advance in medical technology was the start of the American Red Cross. It was started by Clara Barton, who had once worked in a patent office, but later resigned to become a nurse. She took responsibility of organizing, petitioning, and collecting medical supplies for troops. Another medical advance was amputations. 3 out of 4 soldiers were hit in the extremities, or the arms and legs. Amputation accounted for about 75% of all the surgeries. Doctors would use the same saw all day, and didn’t use anesthesia.
A few out of the many events that took place during the Civil War were: Fort Sumter, Emancipation Proclamation, Gettysburg and Antietam, Andersonville, and the assassination of Lincoln. Fort Sumter was the first battle of the Civil War. It was one of the four Southern forts that remained in Union hands. Confederates fired on the fort located in Charleston Harbor. The Union held it for 34 hours, and then they abandoned the fort.
